Start with where and when
Before opening a fabric catalogue, think about an ordinary day on your boat. Where do you sit most often? Which direction does the afternoon sun come from? How will you board and move around with the awning in place? These questions offer a more useful starting point than square metres alone.
Prepare for the measuring discussion
Gather photographs of the boat and existing fittings, and note anything that bothers you about the old awning. Mention pooling, restricted access or awkward removal. This information helps an initial discussion, but a conversation based on photographs does not replace final measurements on the boat.
Compare fabric and details together
Look at samples in daylight beside the existing upholstery where possible. Ask about the product range, intended use and recommended care, as well as the fabric name. Comparing two proposals only by their fabric leaves out edge finishing, reinforcement and attachment details.
Questions before handover
Clarify how to open, remove and store the awning. Operating conditions depend on the installation, so ask for guidance relevant to your boat rather than a universal wind or speed figure. A practical arrangement suited to your routines makes the difference in daily use.
