Boat berths are not always rectangular. A foam mattress for a narrowing bow, curved corners or a locker base cannot be described by length and width alone. Shape, depth and the way it will be used are considered together.

Measure the actual berth shape
Corners, sloping sides and the base level are part of the dimensions. Getting the mattress through a door or hatch may affect the decision to use one piece or sections. The distorted shape of an old mattress is not sufficient on its own.
Let use guide foam selection
Occasional nights aboard and long-term living create different expectations. Discuss firmness, thickness, support preferences and cabin moisture. No single density or construction is proposed for every berth.
Covers and access underneath
Cover removal, section divisions and access to storage below are planned during measurement. Airflow and the existing base matter. Increasing thickness alone does not address trapped moisture beneath a mattress.
Keep comfort claims specific
A photograph does not reveal foam type or firmness. Verify technical values for the chosen product. Decisions are based on individual use and actual measurements, rather than medical or universal comfort claims.

01Can a tapered or curved bow berth be accommodated?
A pattern can be assessed for the actual berth. Side slopes and base dimensions need measuring too.
02Is the firmest foam always the most durable?
Firmness and density are different properties. Durability depends on product construction and how it is used.
03Will an extra layer over the existing foam be enough?
Assess the lower foam and available total depth first. Adding a layer does not always resolve a compressed base.
